Development of Geographic Names Database and National Gazetteer
Geographic names are used to provide information of a place and describe the surrounding about the location. MyGDI initiative underlies the development of the Geographic Names Database towards the standardization and sharing of the information.
Geographic Names Database is a databank to keep the official geographic names, locations, history and gazetteer notifications for use by government and public users. This database is independent of any specific software or operation system.
The purpose is to provide the authoritative information about locations and the publicized spelling of the geographic names in a consistent format for official use by the government and the public. Web gazetteer enables users to browse the data via the internet.
The working group for Database for Geographic Names that is chaired by MaCGDI develops and coordinates the activities to establish the database through meetings, consultations, briefings and workshops. The activities include promoting the activities to establish the national geographic names to state governments and other agencies including getting their feedback.
