GDI for River Basin Management
![]() |
River basin management calls for collaborative effort among the agencies within the basin since the natural geographical boundaries of the basin cut across the borders of administrative units. Management of a river basin is a process to maximize the economic and social benefits associated with the water and land within that basin along with the critical focus to conserve and manage the development of the resources that affect the river including restoring the ecosystem. | |
| The need in river basin management that requires the establishment of multi-agency effort and the nature of the scope that involves geospatial data fits well with MyGDI, the Malaysian GDI initiative. | ||
| Through the infrastructure established under MyGDI, the various agencies within a river basin can coordinate their works especially in sharing the geospatial data across agencies. They can reuse the data that are produced in one agency, enrich them according to their needs and share back the results for the rest of the community to further embed the findings in their works. | ||
| Through MyGDI, the gaps between the authorities and separate sectoral focus can be addressed. Among the issues that can be collaboratively tackled through MyDGI include flood mitigation, management of river corridor that incorporate fisheries, navigation, water resource and water quality, as well as other socio-economic concerns that include land management, pollution, and development pressures. |
