Geographical Names Database (MyGeoname)

Geographical Names Database is the data bank of geographical names. The purpose is to store names, locations, historical backgrounds and gazette notifications that have authoritative records available for government and public use. The application can be accessed via internet.

Geographical names are used every day to describe our surroundings and to tell others where we have been or where we plan to go.

The functions are:

  1. To support socio-economic development, conservation and national infrastructure.
  2. To facilitate in locating various communities by establishing consistent use of geographical names.
  3. To preserve the rich heritage of places, whereby each name tells a story and provides a sense of place.
  4. To identify and reflect culture, heritage and landscape associated with geographic names.

To expedite the process of developing databases for geographical names, the government has established National Geographical Name Committee (JKNG) which was approved by the cabinet on 11th September 2002. JKNG, then formed a committee called Working Group on Geographical Name Database and Web Gazetteer on 11th March 2003, led by MaCGDI.
