Need Geospatial Data?

GIS vs Geospatial. What's Difference?

A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, and displaying data related to positions on Earth's surface. GIS can show many different kinds of data on one map to more easily see, analyze, and understand patterns and relationships.

Geospatial data, GIS data or geodata has explicit geographic positioning information included within it, such as a road network from a GIS, or a geo-referenced satellite image. Geospatial data may include attribute data that describes the features found in the dataset. There are two types of geospatial data -vector and raster.

Geospatial Information

Geospatial information, also known as location information, is information describing the location and names of features beneath, on or above the earth's surface. At its simplest this can mean the basic topographical information found on a map. On a more complex level it can include different location-related datasets combined into layers that show information such as land use and population density.

Data Custodian

Custodian is usually the person responsible for, or the person with administrative control over, granting access to geospatial data while protecting the data as defined by the government. Custodian of the agencies identified by PGN and approved by the Government in accordance with certain criteria which have responsibilities and certain rights.

Lead Agencies

Whereas in situations where the geospatial data entrusted to more than one custodian then a Lead Agency from the custodian of the data will be identified and approved by PGN.
